Japan orders KC-46

Sat Dec 23, 2017 12:16 am

Boeing has made its its first international sale of a KC-46 tanker — to Japan.

Company said it won a $279 million contract to supply the Japan Air Self-Defense Force with its first KC-46 tanker and the necessary logistics support.

Japan already operates four 767-based aerial refueling tankers, a version of the original tanker Boeing proposed for the United States Air Force in 2001. Japan took delivery of those between 2008 and 2010.

Congrats Boeing and Japan Air Self-Defense Force! I wonder how much commonality there is between the KC-46 and the 767-derived tanker they're already operating?

Cool--$1.9 billion for 4 of them, plus parts & service. That's way more than the OPs story, Even with the customary discounts. Does Japan need eight tankers, or do the delivery dates push back so far as to be replacements for their current planes?

I would suspect not much. The KC-46 has a LOT of mods solely for the KC-46 and not reworked from the KC-135.
The refueling boom, the fuel offloading system. all seem to be new.

From an airplane system stand point, it is more important to be common with the rest of the commercial fleet. Since Boeing fleet support is good, that should not be an issue.

As for the tanker specific hardware, even if Japan gets another 4 J frames, the number of spare parts are limited and not getting bigger. Already Boeing has probably built more KC-46 than the number of KC767 from Japan and Italy combined. Spare parts for the KC-46 will be easier to get than the KC767.
