Spill the beans!

I'm going to say either Thai AirAsia X or NokScoot to BKK.

Technically one or both would be flying into DMK (the older Bangkok Airport). My money would be on XJ. XW (NokScoot) had the older (derated ex-SQ) 772s which does have question marks whether if they can fill 400 seats on a older aircraft at decent yields.

They are surely due to fly somewhere in Oz. I read an interview with one of their CEOs in the early days, where they were not interested in Australia for their early destinations as competition was just too hot. But they have been up and running for a good while now.

Wasn't there an issue with Thailand's failure of the ICAO audit a couple of years ago - making it a problem for their individual airlines to fly to countries they were not already flying to? Memory is a bit hazy on that one. I suspect that audit failure is why MEL is still waiting to see TG A350s though.

I do know Chinese tourists make up around a third of visitors to Thailand now, and that is where the Thai LCCs have been concentrating their efforts. That and the countries Thai citizens can visit visa on arrival - Japan and South Korea IIRC.

PER-BKK is 3,296 miles. That is really, really stretching the range of a 737.

My money is still on Thai AirAsia X.

Is the A321LR going to open up more routes from Perth in the future? It has more legs than the 737 and A320 but is there anything in range worth while?

PER-BKK is 2863nm. Norwegian is currently flying 738's across the Atlantic on slighter longer sectors (100nm longer) so while it would be a stretch it could be done. Thai Lion Air will also take delivery of the 737MAX8 from early next year which has a range of 3500nm there's a good chance it could be done with a 737. Also FWIW Thai Lion Air has requested permission to operate the A330

I just saw an article from last year that they were looking at Bangkok-Bali-Perth but with the A330 would take the Bali sector out.

Yes Norwegian does fly TATL with 738 but that's with significant penalty. I read elsewhere on this forum that the flight is blocking some 35-40 seats, certainly wouldn't make the flight worthwhile.

BNE or PER would appear to be favourites.

MEL was on their agenda but it is well and truly covered now with QF and JL.

Aside from Broome, I cant see any other "regional tourist destinations" being overly popular with visitors from London/Europe...but who knows the delights of Kalgoorlie's Hannan Street or Costa del Geraldton may appeal to some

China Eastern delivers daily Shanghai – Brisbane flights
Just nine months after launching four times weekly flights between Brisbane and Shanghai, China Eastern has confirmed it will boost services to daily from November 2017.

Source: http://newsroom.bne.com.au/china-easter ... e-flights/

Good to see the service is going well. Hopefully we will see some more Chinese airlines in BNE soon (in addition to HU later this month).

VA might base some crew in DUD. VA operate all BNE/DUD flights which arrive at some crazy time like 2345 or after midnight, then the aircraft sit at DUD until around 0800, when return to BNE.

1) it seems crazy to aircraft sit at DUD for so long

2) timing only suits Kiwis. Australians used to fly into DUD as a cheaper alternative to flying into ZQN, but now the timings virtually mean you have to overnight around DUD in both directions, if going to ZQN. From memory the flights used to arrive DUD around 1500 & return to BNE at around 1600, which meant pax could drive to ZQN.

Now price sensitive pax either fly to CHC or AKL. CHC pax would drive from there to ZQN (think only NZ now flies CHC/ZQN). AKL pax could fly on NZ or JQ or ZQN.

Would old timings of BNE/DUD flights bastardise the BNE/ZQN flights ? In only a very small way I would have thought ?

That's because it's a DUD flight. No one in their right mind would drive DUD-ZQN when it's completely unnecessary.

Surprised you didn't mention BNE-IVC which REALDEAL quite liked.

I'd happily spend a few nights at Geraldton, a week, say, with a drive down to Dongara. Magic place - great food - wonderful, laid back people. Anyone who doesn't don't know that coast really should spend some time there.

You also can do a detour to Kalbarri on the way to Shark Bay

I also expect Exmouth/Coral Bay and Ningaloo Reef will be pushed as another destination for overseas visitors

BNE/DUD was often $400 less than BNE/ZQN. $400 x however many in your group, is significant amount of money to most families.

VA/NZ can't get rid of BNE/DUD as it's part of their alliance approval. I aslo think that DUD closes less often than ZQN. DUD is now the alternate for all international flights.

JQ plans to increase Indonesian services from 1 Feb 18, including adding a EK codeshare

Qantas has told the International Air Services Commission that Jetstar plans to increase services between Australia and Indonesia from February 1 next year.
To facilitate this it has asked for 1300 seats on the Indonesia route.

Rohan Garnett, executive manager for international affairs, said in the current application “Jetstar is planning to operate these services using B787 aircraft configured with 335 seats and A320 aircraft configured with 180 seats.”
The allocation is sought for five years, covering Qantas and subsidiaries. A tick is also requested for joint services with Emirates.

With DXB temperatures exceeding 50 degrees on the tarmac the dispatch reliability ex-DXB does not surprise me. The move back to SIN couldn't come any sooner!

Stunned by this one! As I posted in the other thread fully expected SFO-MEL first, kudos to UA for holding their own in AU with no star feed, NZ won't be impressed!

I'm not surprised. UA would have a good knowledge of how NZ is doing on IAH-AKL and reasonable knowledge of QF's DFW service. IAH is the only key business market for QF that it doesn't serve and probably never will due to the UA hub so for UA to jump in makes complete sense to me. Moreso given what they've done on LAX & SFO to SIN as it appears UA is determined to push the 787 to its limit.

I hate to say it but people need to give up on a MEL-SFO route. I just can't see it happening.

Speculation. Maybe some of the deposit money for the 6 A380's not yet taken up is being used to pay for this upgrade hmmm.

QF commences codeshare with El Al (LY) from 12 Sept...on flights via BKK, HKG and JNB...isn't going via JNB quite a detour or is it one of the quickest options between SYD and TLV...since the ME3 carriers obviously don't serve TLV.

Most days the LY flight to TLV leaves HKG before the QF flights arrive; maybe it's a better connection through JNB.

(Or, of course, passengers could just connect with oneworld from the QF flight onto the late night CX departure...)
