Windows 10 & FSX

Sat May 21, 2016 8:53 pm

Looks like I got a forced upgrade to Windows 10 overnight. Having read about user's experiences with FSX in the Windows 10 environment, I was hesitant to use the free upgrade, but now that I have it, I've flown a test flight with no major issues. Has anyone else had successes or difficulties with using FSX after the upgrade?

Been using FSX and W10 for a while and no issues at all. I get pretty good performance frame rate wise.

I keep getting reminders to upgrade to W10, but I'm a bit apprehensive about it. Do you have to reinstall anything or should it everything we as it was once complete?

It depends which version you're upgrading from. It's been a while but, as I recall, you can't go straight from 8.0 to 10 without performing a clean installation. You can, however, upgrade to 8.1 first then upgrade to 10 without losing anything.

To be honest, I don't know but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to upgrade without a clean install. I think the issue was specific to 8.0. You could take a look here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...ndows-10/upgrade-to-windows-10-faq

It explains what's involved and how to check for compatibility.

FS2004 can work with Windows 10 but you might have to do a bit of work. A search for "Windows 10 FS2004" reveals plenty of discussion about it.

However... you can pick up FSX on Steam for much less than the original price, along with a fair selection of reasonably priced add-ons.

I haven't had any problems with FSX on Windows 10. I've since moved on to P3DV3 which runs without a problem.

I'll give an update to anyone who is looking at making the step to W10. I done it last week and it was put simply, the biggest mistake of my computing life.

I had errors trying to go back to W7 which has resulted in me losing all my FSX stuff and everything else which was installed. Its been so tragic that I'm thinking of using this as a turning point and making the move to P3D... Maybe its a sign

The laughing face is there because if I didn't laugh... well... I'd cry

A lot, if not all, of your FSX addon's will work in P3D with a little work. Shouldn't be the end of the world and will be well worth the move. Trust me.

I got my Windows 10 update a few days ago and my FSX seems to run just as good as it did before.

Mine actually works better, and I get far fewer error messages and crashes.

I am kinda new here and I do apologize if this has already been answered but here goes my situation and question...finally after years long over due I finally had some extra money to buy a new desktop from dell with Windows 10 and upgrading to FSX from FS9, which version should I purchase of FSX that will be compatible with Windows 10? I plan on using PMDG aircraft and using FS Dream Team scenery among other sceneries. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you're buying a new simulator at this point, might I suggest Lockheed's Prepar3D or XPlane? If you have the computer performance to go with it, and you're going with the high detail addons you've described, Prepar3D is going to perform better and is actually supported now, as most developers including FSDT are dropping FSX as of last year. You're going to have to buy a new version of the PMDG anyway, so if cost isn't an issue that should be the better option for you.

P3D v4 is 64-bit and better uses the hardware of computers. FSX and other sims are 32-bit and are limited due to that. (with that said, I am still a FSX user but will be migrating to P3D soon-ish, still thinking of buying a new laptop as I am unsure if my current one can handle it).

I have been running FSX on Windows 9 and 10 for some time now and mostly without issue. Recently, however, I have been encountering some pretty stupid and annoying things, such as nav lights not displaying or the graphics progressively failing as the flight goes on.

I am a bit late for the party but maybe it’s still helpfull for you.
If you want to stay using FSX then I suggest to buy the FSX steam edition which is a bit tweaked compared to the old FSX.
It is often on sale. I got mine for 5 Euro.
I use P3Dv4 now and that is far superior though.

I am making the move to P3Dv4, maybe tonight. I bought a new lsptop, an i9 at 2.9ghz, 16gb ram and an 8gb 1080gtx gpu. FSX served me well, but it is time to move on.

I have been setting up P3Dv4 on my new laptop, and so far, I am very impressed. It is taking me a while to set it up as not only do I like flying, but I also do AI spotting. P3Dv4 does not recognise AI models designed for FS9, it only properly displays models for FSX and P3Dv4, so that part is slowing me down. But I recently set up all my ORBX sceneries and my FlyTampa Sydney scenery and now am installing the models, textures and traffic files. I only have three airlines installed so far at Sydney (REX, Virgin Australia and Tigerair) and my frame rates are constantly hitting the 40fps cap that I set. I did not get anywhere near that in FSX. And last night I found the tower view in P3Dv4 that is really awesome, looking at the radar to see what is in the air with the tower view will be an amazing time killer for me once my traffic is fully set up.
